Rivier planning first online degree

NASHUA – Rivier University has been granting degrees in ways to improve the health of the public since it was founded in 1933, but perhaps surprisingly, only recently have those degrees included public health.

That changed with the creation this year of a bachelor’s degree in public health and, as of January, an online-only master’s degree in the topic. Those additions weren’t made on a whim; just read the news.

“Look at Ebola. It used to be just a problem in Africa, but it was just a matter of time before it became our health problem here. We’re not immune anymore on our shores; we really need to understand, to track health issues globally. That is why we decided there is a need for more people to be educated in public health,” said Paula Williams, dean of nursing.

Obesity is another example of a health issue that can’t really be tackled by individual doctoring, she said. It requires the mix of approaches at the group level that is covered by the public health field.
