UM launches first online-only four-year degree

Ben Rioux was three years into his degree at the University of Montana when his wife got a job offer she couldn’t refuse, but there was one problem: the job was in Spokane, three hours away.

Rioux, a media arts student, remembers talking about his impending move with Rick Hughes, a UM professor specializing in integrated digital media.

When Hughes asked him what he was planning to do about his studies, Rioux said his answer was basically, “I don’t know.”  

The few Washington state schools he looked into weren’t going to work; Eastern Washington University has no media arts program, and Gonzaga, a private Catholic college, sounded too expensive to bother checking out.

Then Hughes told him that the School of Media Arts would offer an online-only bachelor’s degree, starting this fall. The program is the first at the University to offer a completely online undergraduate degree.

Rioux, 37, registered as a full-time student with 12 credits and his problem was solved.
